This glittering ball of stars is the globular cluster NGC 1898, which lies toward the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud one of our closest cosmic neighbors. From their initial analysis of 12 of these compact objects, the researchers determined that five of them are not only globular clusters but among the oldest ones known. The regions in which blue tapers off and becomes red are where the cone of influence ends-the stellar winds simply have no effect there. Globular clusters are ancient collections of stars from a galaxy’s infancy and contain clues about its earliest phases of formation and growth. The Hyades cluster is very well studied due to its location, but previous searches for planets have produced only one.

This cluster, known as M53 and cataloged as NGC 5024, is one of about 250 globular clusters that survive in our Galaxy.
